Egg donation is considered when a woman can no longer produce eggs of sufficient quantity and/or quality for conventional assisted reproduction. In such cases, eggs from a third-party donor are used.  

Until recently, egg donation was only available to women in heterosexual couples, but recent changes in bioethics laws now allow for double donation, where both egg and sperm donors are used.  

 Common Indications for Egg Donation  

1. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI) – This includes:  

   - Genetic conditions like Turner syndrome.  

   - Previous chemotherapy or pelvic radiotherapy, which can damage ovarian function.  

2. Repeated IVF or IUI Failure – If multiple failed fertility treatments suggest poor egg quality, egg donation may be the best option.  

3. Age-Related Fertility Decline – When advanced maternal age and low ovarian reserve make conception unlikely with the woman’s own eggs.  

 How Does Egg Donation Work?  

- The donor's eggs are retrieved and fertilized through IVF using:  

  - The male partner’s sperm, or  

  - A sperm donor’s sperm (double donation).  

- Before embryo transfer, the recipient undergoes an evaluation of uterine health to ensure optimal implantation conditions.  

- Once the donor-egg embryo is transferred, the recipient carries the pregnancy and gives birth, making her the gestational mother.
