What Is the Role of the Fallopian Tubes?

Fertility
The Fallopian tubes are where the egg and sperm meet for fertilization. After ovulation, the mature egg is released and captured by the fimbriae, the widened, finger-like end of the tube located near the ovary.
Once inside the tube, the egg moves toward the fertilization site, where sperm—having traveled through the vagina, cervix, and uterus—can meet and fertilize it.
The tubes are lined with tiny hair-like structures (cilia) that help transport the fertilized egg (embryo) toward the uterus for implantation. However, implantation is not guaranteed.
Can Pregnancy Occur with Only One Fallopian Tube?
Yes. A single functional Fallopian tube is often enough to achieve pregnancy, as long as it is healthy and ovulation occurs on the same side.
