A menstrual period is a reflection of hormonal activity in the ovaries, specifically the production of estrogen and progesterone, and how the uterus responds to these hormones.

Each cycle, the uterine lining (endometrium) thickens in preparation for a potential pregnancy. This lining is meant to support the implantation of an embryo. If no implantation occurs, the top layer of the endometrium sheds and is expelled, resulting in menstruation.
