What Are the Possible Complications of IVF?

Complications from IVF are rare, but couples should be informed of potential risks associated with ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval.

  • Ovarian stimulation risks:

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (very rare).

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and fluid accumulation in severe cases.

Egg retrieval procedure risks

  • Internal bleeding, which may require surgery or, in very rare cases, a blood transfusion.

  • Ovarian torsion or abscess, which in extreme cases may require surgical removal of an ovary.

Pregnancy-related risks

Multiple pregnancies, particularly if more than one embryo is transferred, which increases the chances of preterm birth and pregnancy complications.

Although these risks exist, serious complications remain exceptional, and IVF remains a safe and effective fertility treatment.
