An ovulation test detects the surge of luteinizing hormone (LH) in urine, which occurs about 36 hours before ovulation. This LH surge triggers the release of the egg from the ovary.

These tests are fairly reliable and can help identify the fertile window, making it easier to time intercourse for conception. However, they do not provide information about the quality of ovulation or the health of the egg.
