Egg retrieval is performed through a transvaginal aspiration procedure under ultrasound guidance. This procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia.
General anesthesia is usually a light sedation, meaning the patient is not intubated or placed under full respiratory support.
A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into the ovaries under ultrasound guidance.
The follicular fluid is aspirated and immediately sent to the laboratory, where specialists check for the presence of eggs.
Follicles measuring 16-22 mm are most likely to contain mature eggs suitable for IVF, so they are always retrieved. Smaller follicles, between 12-15 mm, may also be aspirated, as they sometimes contain mature eggs that can be used.
