Egg retrieval is performed through a transvaginal aspiration procedure under ultrasound guidance. This procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia.
  • General anesthesia is usually a light sedation, meaning the patient is not intubated or placed under full respiratory support.

  • A thin needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into the ovaries under ultrasound guidance.

  • The follicular fluid is aspirated and immediately sent to the laboratory, where specialists check for the presence of eggs.

Follicles measuring 16-22 mm are most likely to contain mature eggs suitable for IVF, so they are always retrieved. Smaller follicles, between 12-15 mm, may also be aspirated, as they sometimes contain mature eggs that can be used.
